Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gum line that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. The three stages of gum disease, from least to most severe are gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. Swollen and bleeding gums are early signs that you have periodontal disease. It is caused by bacteria in dental plaque. Plaque is the sticky substance that forms on your teeth soon after you have brushed. Daily brushing and flossing, when done correctly, can help to remove most of the plaque.
Plaque that is not removed can harden and form “tartar” that cannot be cleaned by brushing. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar.
